Bahria University

Bahria University (Urdu: بحریہ یونیورسٹی; BU) is a Federally Chartered Public Sector University which was established on 7 February 2000 through a Presidential Ordinance. It is a multi-campus institution of higher education with its principal office situated in Islamabad the capital city of Pakistan. BU has two campuses, one in Islamabad and the other in Karachi, Pakistan. Other Constituent Units include Institute of Professional Psychology (IPP), Karachi, National Center of Maritime Policy Research (NCMPR), Karachi and Bahria University Medical & Dental College (BUM&DC), Karachi.[2]

It is a coeducational public University recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.[3] Its Engineering, Medical and LLB programs are recognized by Pakistan Engineering Council.,[4] Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and Pakistan Bar Council respectively.

History


Bahria University has its genesis in Bahria Colleges and Bahria Institutes of Management and Computer Sciences which were established by Pakistan Navy in nineteen eighties and nineties in Islamabad and Karachi. These Institutes and Colleges were affiliated with Peshawar University to conduct Bachelor and Master Degree programmes in the disciplines of Business Management and Computer Sciences. The academic facilities and quality of these programmes attracted large number of students to enroll in these Institutes; thus necessitating the management to enlarge their scope and academic infrastructure. It led to conceive the idea of establishing a fully chartered university by the name of Bahria University which could offer Bachelor and higher degree programmes in variety of academic disciplines to large segment of society. The University since its establishment is contributing tremendously in the promotion of higher education and in producing professionals in areas like Electronics & Telecommunication, Electrical, Computer Sciences, Software Engineering, Business Management, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Professional Psychology, Social Sciences and Law. Bahria University now stands as one of the leading Universities of Pakistan. Its graduates are working in various Public Sector Organizations, multi-national companies and international concerns. The growth and policies of university are governed by its Board of Governors comprising senior naval officers and representatives of Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education and Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Chief of the Naval Staff is the Chairman Board of Governors as well as Pro-Chancellor of the University

Student Resource Center (SRC)
SRC facilitates students and provides them the opportunity to develop their management, communication, team building, social and leadership skills.

Each club is managed by the SRC and headed by a chief coordinator, under whom a deputy coordinator and team leaders are nominated according to the requirements. SRC publishes Bahria University monthly newsletter named as "Bugle".

Bahria Business Club (BBC)
Department of Management Science manages 'Bahria Business Club' (BBC) at the Islamabad Campus. It plans activities to prepare young students for various types of competitions and test their business skills and ingenuity to solve problems pertaining to business world. It encourages students to compete with their peers in other universities.

Sports
The University facilitates its students to participate in national and university level sports.[9]

Gymnasium
A new gymnasium in collaboration with HEC has been constructed at the Islamabad campus. It is a multi story structure with a wide range of indoor games facilities: courts for basket ball, volley ball and badminton, a fitness room equipped with the latest machines and a cafeteria.

Golf
Margalla Greens Golf Club, located at the foot of the Margalla hills, is available for Bahria University officers, personnel, faculty and students. The golf course membership is free for the students, faculty and staff of Bahria University.
